What is the best time to visit Janki Kund?

October to March is the best window to visit Janki Kund and Chitrakoot. The region’s weather during these months is cool and dry, with temperatures ranging from 10°C at night to around 25°C during the day — comfortable for walking between ghats, climbing the steps to Hanuman Dhara, and spending time outdoors at the river.

Winter (November–February): This is the peak tourist season in Chitrakoot. The Mandakini runs clear, the ghats are clean, and the surrounding forested hills are green if you arrive soon after the rains or golden and hazy in the deep winter. Ram Navami (March–April) draws the largest crowds of the year, so the weeks immediately before — February to mid-March — offer a good balance of comfortable weather and manageable crowds.

Monsoon (July–September): Chitrakoot receives significant rainfall during the monsoon, and the Mandakini can swell considerably. Janki Kund’s lower steps may be submerged, and the ghat can be slippery and unsafe for bathing. The forests around Chitrakoot are lush and spectacular in the monsoon if you enjoy that kind of landscape, but access to some sites (particularly Gupt Godavari caves) becomes difficult. Visit only if you are comfortable with rain and uneven terrain.

Summer (April–June): Temperatures in Chitrakoot can reach 42–44°C by May and June. If you visit in summer, plan all outdoor activity before 9:00 AM and after 5:00 PM. The ghats near water are relatively bearable even in the heat, since the Mandakini provides a cooling effect in the mornings.

Festival timing: Ram Navami (March–April), Diwali (October–November), and Kartik Purnima (October–November) are the major festival periods when Chitrakoot is especially alive with pilgrims. Vivah Panchami (November–December) also draws devotees. If you want to experience the pilgrimage atmosphere at full intensity, these are the times to come — just book accommodation well in advance.
