Frequently Asked Question

What is the best time to visit Gupt Godavari?

October through March is the ideal window to visit Gupt Godavari. Chitrakoot’s winters are mild, with daytime temperatures between 12°C and 25°C, making the trek to the cave entrance and the walk through the caverns genuinely enjoyable. Mornings in this season are especially pleasant — the air is clear, the light is good, and the crowds are thinner before 10 AM.

Spring (February–March): A great time for families. Ram Navami falls in March or April, drawing large numbers of pilgrims to Chitrakoot, so if you want to experience the festival atmosphere, plan around that. Otherwise, the weeks just before Ram Navami are the sweet spot — warm enough to be comfortable, but not yet crowded.

Summer (April–June): Manageable in the mornings, but Chitrakoot gets hot in the afternoons (temperatures can reach 42°C in May–June). If you visit in summer, go early — arrive at the cave by 7:00–8:00 AM and be done before noon. The caves themselves stay cooler inside due to the natural stone surroundings.

Monsoon (July–September): This is when visiting gets tricky. The path to the cave entrance can be slippery, and the water inside the caves can rise significantly. In heavy monsoon years, access to the inner cave (where the underground stream flows) may be restricted or dangerous. The forest around Chitrakoot is lush and beautiful during this time, but weigh that against the real safety concerns inside the caves.

Post-monsoon (October–November): Often the best time of all. The landscape is green from the rains, the cave water has receded, temperatures are moderate, and the roads are in good condition. This is when you get the most from a Gupt Godavari visit.

The caves open at 7:00 AM and close around 6:00 PM. Allocate about 2 hours for the visit, including the walk to the entrance, the cave exploration, and a few minutes at the shrine inside.
