Frequently Asked Question

How do I reach the Somnath Temple?

Somnath is located in the Prabhas Patan area near Veraval town in the Gir Somnath district of Gujarat. Here are the practical ways to get there:

By Train (recommended): Veraval railway station is just 7 km from the temple and is the most convenient railhead. Trains connect Veraval to Ahmedabad (Somnath Express, ~9–10 hours), Rajkot (3.5 hours), and Mumbai (Somnath Express via Rajkot, ~22 hours). From Veraval station, auto-rickshaws to Somnath cost around ₹80–120.

Alternatively, Somnath now has its own small railway station (Shree Somnath station) on a branch line from Veraval — check current train schedules as connectivity has improved in recent years.

By Road: Gujarat State Road Transport (GSRTC) and private buses run from Ahmedabad (420 km, ~7 hours), Rajkot (200 km, ~3.5 hours), and Surat (550 km, ~9 hours). Private Volvo coaches from Ahmedabad and Surat are a comfortable option for overnight travel. From Rajkot, taxis cost around ₹3,000–3,500 one-way.

By Air: Diu Airport is the closest at 63 km (about 1.5 hours by road). It has limited flights — mainly from Mumbai. Rajkot Airport (200 km) has better connectivity with flights from Delhi, Mumbai, and other major cities. Porbandar Airport (120 km) is another option. From any of these airports, you’ll need to hire a taxi or take a bus.

From key cities:

  • Ahmedabad to Somnath: 420 km, ~7 hours by road or overnight bus/train
  • Dwarka to Somnath: 230 km, ~4 hours — good for combining both pilgrimage sites
  • Junagadh to Somnath: 85 km, ~1.5 hours — easy day trip
  • Mumbai to Somnath: ~900 km, best covered by overnight train to Veraval

Once at Somnath, the temple, beach, and most nearby attractions are within 3–4 km of each other and can be covered by auto-rickshaw or on foot.
