Frequently Asked Question

Are there any rules or restrictions for visiting the Somnath Temple?

Somnath Temple has a firm set of rules that are enforced consistently, and knowing them before you arrive will save you inconvenience at the entrance.

Photography and electronics: Mobile phones, cameras, video cameras, and any electronic recording devices are strictly prohibited inside the temple premises. You must deposit your phone and camera at the designated cloakroom near the entrance before entering — this is mandatory, not optional. The cloakroom is free to use.

Dress code: Modest dress is required. Shoulders must be covered, and shorts or short skirts are not permitted for either men or women. Wearing a traditional dhoti, saree, or salwar kameez is ideal; Western formal wear with covered legs and shoulders is also accepted. Stoles or dupatta are available for rental near the entrance if you need to cover up.

Footwear: Shoes and footwear of all kinds must be removed and deposited at the footwear stand before the entrance. Footwear lockers are available free of cost.

Prohibited substances: Alcohol, tobacco, and non-vegetarian food are strictly prohibited in the entire Somnath complex and the surrounding temple area. This is enforced.

Bags and luggage: Large bags and backpacks are not permitted inside the temple. A cloakroom is available. Carry only essentials — a small cloth bag or pouch is acceptable.

Non-Hindus: Non-Hindus are allowed to enter the temple premises and attend darshan. There is no verification, but all visitors are expected to observe the same rules of decorum and dress.

Queues: On busy days, separate queues are organized for men and women. Follow the designated queue — there is no provision for VIP or paid fast-track darshan at Somnath.
