In the heart of the rugged Aravalli hills of southern Rajasthan lies a city that seems to have been plucked from a romantic dream. This is Udaipur, the “City of Lakes.” It is a city of stunning, ethereal beauty, where magnificent white marble palaces seem to float on the shimmering waters of serene lakes, and a maze of narrow, winding streets leads to ancient temples, vibrant markets, and beautiful gardens. Often called the “Venice of the East,” Udaipur is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in all of India, a place where history, culture, and natural beauty blend into a perfect, unforgettable symphony.

Founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II, Udaipur became the new capital of the Mewar kingdom after the historic city of Chittorgarh was sacked. The Maharanas of Mewar, known for their fierce pride and valiant resistance against foreign invaders, created a capital that was both well-protected by the surrounding hills and breathtakingly beautiful. The city’s planners created a sophisticated and interconnected system of lakes, which not only served as a defense but also provided a stunning setting for their magnificent palaces.

Life in Udaipur revolves around its magnificent centerpiece, Lake Pichola. On its eastern bank stands the colossal City Palace, a sprawling complex of courtyards, corridors, and palaces that is the largest in all of Rajasthan. In the middle of the lake itself seem to float two fairy-tale island palaces: the Jag Mandir and the world-famous Jag Niwas, now the ultra-luxurious Taj Lake Palace Hotel. To take a boat ride on Lake Pichola, especially at sunset when the palaces are bathed in a soft, golden light, is to witness a scene of such perfect beauty that it feels almost unreal.

Udaipur is a city that invites you to slow down and savour its atmosphere. It is a haven for artists, poets, and romantics. The old city is a delight to explore on foot, with its charming lanes revealing hidden art galleries, artisan workshops selling beautiful miniature paintings and handcrafted leather goods, and charming rooftop restaurants that offer stunning views of the lake and the palaces. A journey to Udaipur is an immersion into a world of royal splendor, a chance to live out a fairy tale, and an experience of romance and beauty that will linger in your heart forever.

Key Attractions:

  • City Palace: A majestic and sprawling palace complex that stands magnificently on the eastern bank of Lake Pichola. It is a breathtaking fusion of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles. A visit takes you through a series of stunning palaces, courtyards, and gardens, including the Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard) with its stunning glass mosaics, the Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors), and the Zenana Mahal (Queen’s Quarters). The palace also houses a superb museum showcasing royal artifacts.

  • Lake Pichola Boat Ride: The most quintessential Udaipur experience. A boat ride on the serene waters of Lake Pichola offers the most spectacular views of the City Palace, the bathing ghats, and the surrounding Aravalli hills. The boat usually takes you around the two famous island palaces, Jag Mandir and the Lake Palace, giving you a picture-perfect perspective of their beauty.

  • Jag Mandir: A beautiful island palace built on Lake Pichola. It is famous for its stunning garden courtyard and its beautifully carved stone elephants. It was once used as a summer resort by the royal family and even served as a refuge for the Mughal prince Shah Jahan (who later built the Taj Mahal) before he became emperor.

  • Saheliyon ki Bari (Garden of the Maidens): A beautiful and serene garden built for a group of 48 young maids who accompanied a princess to Udaipur as part of her dowry. The garden is a delightful oasis of green, with beautiful fountains, lotus pools, marble elephants, and lush lawns, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling city.

  • Jagdish Temple: A large and magnificent Indo-Aryan temple located right in the heart of the old city. Built in the 17th century, it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is famous for its stunningly intricate and detailed carvings that cover its entire structure. The vibrant, lively atmosphere and the daily aartis make it a major spiritual hub.

  • Monsoon Palace (Sajjangarh Palace): Perched on a high hilltop overlooking the city and its lakes, the Monsoon Palace offers the most breathtaking panoramic view of the entire region. It was originally built to be an astronomical observatory and to watch the monsoon clouds roll in, hence its name. It is the perfect spot to watch a spectacular sunset over the Aravalli hills.

  • Bagore Ki Haveli: A beautiful historic haveli located right on the waterfront at Gangori Ghat. The haveli has been beautifully restored and converted into a museum that showcases the opulent lifestyle of the Mewar aristocracy, with exhibits of costumes, modern art, and royal artifacts. In the evening, the haveli comes alive with the Dharohar folk dance show, a vibrant and entertaining performance of traditional Rajasthani music and dance.

  • The Old City and its Bazaars: The best way to experience Udaipur is to get lost in the narrow, winding lanes of the old city. The area is a treasure trove of shops selling beautiful local handicrafts, including miniature paintings, silver jewelry, textiles, and leather goods. It is a fantastic place to explore on foot and soak in the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
