Veni Daan is a significant Hindu ritual predominantly performed by married couples, particularly from Maharashtra and South India. It takes place at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, a sacred site where the rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati converge. This ritual symbolizes the couple’s desire to be reborn as husband and wife across seven lifetimes, reinforcing the vows made during their marriage.
The ceremony involves the husband cutting a small portion of his wife’s plaited hair, which is then offered to the river. This act represents the removal of sins from seven lifetimes and is a prayer for the husband’s long life, family prosperity, and a lasting marital bond. The ritual mirrors the traditional Hindu wedding ceremony and includes dressing up in ceremonial attire, performing puja, and the husband adorning his wife’s hair with flowers before the hair offering.
The couple may also take a boat ride to the Sangam and immerse themselves in its waters, completing the ritual. Veni Daan is more than a religious act; it is a cultural experience deeply embedded in Hindu spirituality, emphasizing the sanctity of the marital bond.
