Frequently Asked Question

Who is Goddess Lalita Devi?

Goddess Lalita Devi is a form of the primordial divine feminine — Shakti — worshipped as a manifestation of Goddess Sati, the first wife of Lord Shiva. In the Shakta tradition, Lalita is often identified with Tripura Sundari (also called Shodashi or Rajarajeshwari), one of the ten Mahavidyas and considered the supreme form of the Goddess.

The name “Lalita” comes from Sanskrit and means “playful,” “charming,” or “she who plays.” It conveys the aspect of divine grace combined with absolute power — the Goddess who creates, sustains, and dissolves the universe with the ease of play. The Lalita Sahasranama, a hymn of a thousand names of the Goddess from the Brahmanda Purana, is among the most revered Shakta texts and describes Lalita Devi in extraordinary detail as the ruler of Srichakra, the geometric representation of the cosmos.

At Naimisharanya, Lalita Devi is worshipped as one of the 108 Shakti Peethas — the sacred sites where parts of Sati’s body fell to Earth after Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to dismember her corpse (which Shiva was carrying in grief after her self-immolation). According to tradition, the hand of Sati fell at Naimisharanya, consecrating the site permanently.

Devotees of the Shakta tradition visit the Lalita Devi Temple at Naimisharanya to offer worship and seek the Goddess’s blessings for protection, prosperity, and liberation. Navaratri (both Chaitra and Sharadiya) is the most important time to visit, when the temple holds special Devi rituals and large numbers of pilgrims arrive from across Uttar Pradesh and beyond.
